Wedding Invitation Etiquette – Important Do’s and Don’ts
By Susan Jonesetiquette-for-wedding-invitations

Are you ready to invite guests to your wedding but you’re not quite sure about the proper wedding invitation etiquette? Here are some important tips to help you.

Do:

Enclose a reception card along with your wedding invitation when the ceremony and the reception will be held at different locations. The reception card should also be provided with an envelope and contain specific information about the reception.

Use casual names such as “Uncle Henry and Aunt Beth” or “Grandma” to relatives that are close to you in addressing the inner envelope as this will show them how much they mean to you, even if you are planning a formal event.

Mail your invitation six to eight weeks before your wedding date. If, however, your wedding date is set during a holiday season or you are inviting a lot of guests that are from out of state, observe wedding invitation etiquette by mailing the invitations sooner to give your guests ample time to plan and make hotel reservations and organize their schedule.

Position the word “black tie” in the lower right hand corner of the invitation if you are planning for a formal wedding so that your guests can dress accordingly.

Don’t:

Address envelopes as Mr. and Mrs. William Cooper and Family. The names of children under 18 years old should be included in the invitation, while children over 18 should be sent their own invitation. (That’s if you’re inviting children.)

Use nicknames. Always use the first, middle (optional) , and last name. Some people do not want their middle names included in the invitation; don’t use initials, simply do not include their middle names.

Abbreviate. Only “Mr.”, “Mrs.”, or “Dr.” can be abbreviated. All other titles should be written completely.

Abbreviate dates, addresses and time.

Write the word “and” as “&”.

Observing the proper wedding invitation etiquette is quite important when inviting guests to share your special day. I hope these tips have been useful and have helped you on the most romantic journey of your life!
