Quick and Easy Ways to “Green” Up Your Wedding
By Bridget Mora
When you are planning a wedding, wouldn’t it be nice if you could also take a few steps to make your event more friendly to the environment. After all, in our daily lives, most of us have found that it is quite easy to make a few small changes that can add up to a more eco-conscious lifestyle. You may be surprised that it is equally simple to “green” up your wedding, as well.
Some couples go out of their way to plan an environmentally friendly wedding, which is certainly a fantastic way to start a new life together. But what about the couple who is not quite ready to go buying carbon offsets, but would still like to do what they can without incurring too much extra work or expense? Happily, there are some choices that you can make that are really effortless.
Lighting is one of the most important things used to create a romantic mood at a wedding, and nothing is more beautiful than candlelight. But did you know that some candles use wicks or wax that can actually pollute the air? A better choice is to use beeswax candles that will not emit any toxic fumes. Beeswax candles are also quite easy to make, for the crafty brides out there.
Another simple way to have a more eco-friendly wedding is to re-use materials. Instead of buying something new, see if you can find it vintage. For instance, if you are looking for a way to add some style to your wedding venue, what about seeking out vintage tablecloths? For an all-white wedding, it would look very pretty to have a variety of different textured cloths, such as brocade, lace, linen, and jacquard. Not only will you get a much more interesting look than you would using the basic white linens offered by the caterer, but you will be cutting down on the harsh chemicals that your caterer’s laundry service would use to clean the rentals.
When it comes to your wedding jewelry, there are also some lower impact choices that the bride can make. One of the easiest is to wear sparkling Swarovksi crystal wedding jewelry instead of diamonds. The crystal jewelry is not only much environmentally cleaners, but you will also save a bundle on your accessories while still looking fabulous, so it is truly a win-win situation.
Many couples like the idea of giving out seeds or saplings for their wedding favors. That way, the guests will have a token that can be planted and nurtured, which has wonderful symbolism, as well as a positive impact on the Earth. If you choose this type of favor, the one thing to keep in mind (especially for the saplings), is that you are giving your guests a species that will thrive in their hometown. It doesn’t do a guest from Arizona, for instance, much good to receive a water-thirsty plant. You may wish to have a few varieties of trees or seeds to give to your guests based on where they live.
Speaking of eco-friendly gifts, the wedding guests can get in on the act as well. Planting a tree or shrub is both good for Mother Nature, and a nice symbolic gesture. It makes an especially thoughtful gift for a couple with a new home that lacks landscaping, or for an avid gardener. When my cousin was married, I gave him and his new wife a pair of lilac bushes which were delivered and planted by a nursery in their area, so they would be hardy for their climate.
Having a more green wedding doesn’t have to be challenging or expensive. The small changes that you make can add up very quickly. And starting off your marriage by showing respect for the environment is surely an auspicious beginning.
