Dealing With Fighting Bridesmaids

Your wedding should be a fun time, and it is most fun when it is shared with friends. If your bridesmaids are not getting along though, it can turn into a stressful time instead. There are some things that you can do to promote harmony in your bridal party.
There are plenty of reasons why your bridesmaids may be fighting. It might be that you have friends from different parts of your life who are just have nothing in common. Or maybe your sister doesn’t like all of your friends, or vice versa. Whatever the cause of the rift, the bridesmaids should have the good sense to work out a truce for the sake of the bride. But if they seem unable to do so, then the bride may need to step in to smooth things over. At least you have the benefit of really knowing each girl well, so you may be able to find some common ground between them.
Another reason why bridesmaids are likely to battle is jealousy. This can take many forms. Maybe one of your bridesmaids had really wanted to be the maid of honor, and is mad at the person who was chosen over her. Or perhaps she thinks that one of the other bridesmaids is getting to take a bigger role in picking out the bridesmaid dresses or deciding on a shower theme. There are all sorts of reasons why feelings can be hurt, even when nobody has mean intentions.
The bride can try to avoid creating tension between the bridesmaids by treating each one as equally as possible. This is one of the reasons why brides will frequently choose the same bridesmaid gifts for each attendant. If each bridesmaid receives the same thank you gift, there is no chance that they will compare gifts. Sometimes a bridesmaid can think one of the other girls got something more special or expensive than the gift she received, and it can cause hard feelings. Don’t be afraid to splurge a little on your maid of honor’s gift, though; it is customary to give her a grander present than the rest of the attendants.
Sometimes what your bridesmaids fight about is completely beyond your control. In fact, it may not even have anything to do with your wedding. When this is the case, it can be trickier to get the situation under control and to get both sides to calm down. What often works best is to have a private sit-down with each bridesmaid. Explain to her that you have noticed some tension between her and one of the other attendants, and that it is making you, as the bride, feel very sad and stressed. Emphasize that you are not taking sides; all you want is to find a way to heal the hurt feelings. When the destructive nature of their behavior is brought to their attention, most bridesmaids will try to take the high road, for the sake of the bride’s feelings.
Another way to lighten up the mood is to plan some fun activities for your bridesmaids as a group. It may be that two girls who do not get along can find some common ground when they are out doing something fun together. Try to find a group activity, such as ice skating or a pedicure party, that everyone can enjoy.
When your bridal party is getting along, it makes the entire wedding more pleasant for the bride. That way, she can count on her friends to be her support system and to join in on the fun of the wedding. And if your bridesmaids are truly unable to play nicely with each other, just remind them that they only have to put on a happy face until the wedding, and then they can go their separate ways!
